The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has stated that he is committed to serving the country rather than the National Democratic Congress, to which he belongs (NDC).
As Speaker of Parliament, he says he will not do the bidding of any political party.
Mr. Bagbin told Ghanaians that he will carry out his duties in accordance with the law.
“I no longer belong to any political group. I am Ghana’s Speaker. I am not a member of the NPP. I am not a member of the NDC. I am Ghana’s Speaker. And it is up to me to keep the balance. My responsibility is to ensure that there is a level playing field, and the decision is made and announced. That’s it.”
“And, so, if you sit down and look at me and think that maybe you were my girlfriend before [and, therefore] I should give you an advantage over another who I’ve never met, please, then don’t come to me; you won’t get it. Let’s finish; after work, we can do that business together. Not when I’m working. That’s my nature; that’s how I’ve been up to this time and, so, it’s unfortunate that these things are happening,” he said.
He was responding to allegations leveled by the NDC’s National Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, that he and some members of the Minority caucus in Parliament deceived the party by approving three of Akufo-ministerial Addo’s nominees against whom they had previously raised red flags during their vetting.
It should be remembered that Parliament voted three weeks ago to approve President Akufo-appointments Addo’s for three ministerial positions, which the NDC party believes should have been rejected by the minority in Parliament.
Mr. Gyamfi characterized the acceptance of the minister-nominees as a betrayal in comments on Facebook.
In his remarks, Sammy Gyamfi singled out the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu; the Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak and even the NDC-backed Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
“They brazenly defied the leadership of the party and betrayed the collective good for their selfish interest,” Mr. Gyamfi said.
Mr.Gyamfi also added that “we have a Speaker who rode on the back of the NDC into the office to pursue his own parochial agenda and nothing more”.
