Ghana’s social media space has been buzzing with a specific trend in response to recent increases in fuel prices and other tariffs. Ghanaians started a trend with the hashtag #FixTheCountry to express their frustrations about the need for government to do their best to remedy the situation, among other issues affecting the country.
Since the trend began, many people have expressed their opinions and the various sectors of the economy that they believe should be fixed.
Given that this trend is aimed at the Akufo-Addo government, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Member of Parliament for the Nsawam Adoagiri constituency, lashed out at Ghanaians.
In a deleted tweet obtained by iDO GH News, he stated that while Ghanaians are tweeting about the need to #FixTheCountry, they should remember that the majority of them do not pay their taxes, accept bribes, do not respect elders, do not arrive at work on time, and politicize every good policy.
He also stated that Ghanaians overprice products and services, destroy state property, do not keep their environment clean, do not buy Ghanaian products, and engage in illegal activities.
Annoh-Dompreh also stated that those yelling “fix the country” are cheating on their spouses and having affairs with girls who are old enough to be their daughters. Insulting those who have jumped on the current social media trend, he stated emphatically that it is sheer stupidity and advised them to work on themselves.
He has however taken back his words and rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians. In a series of tweets sighted by iDO GH News team, the Nsawan Adoagiri MP apologized for his earlier tweet.
I would like to apologise for an earlier tweet which failed to convey both seriousness of the times and to capture the essence of what the youth is demanding.— Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh (@FAnnohDompreh) May 4, 2021
Throughout my time in public office, I have always known that collective action and responsibility are important.
