C.K Akonnor recalls six players after long absence from Black Stars camp

Six players have been recalled to the Black Stars squad for upcoming friendlies against Morocco and Ivory Coast after being out for months.

C.K Akonnor handed out 30 invites to certain players on Wednesday, May 12, 2021, to help the team prepare for the AFCON, which will be held in Cameroon next year, after FIFA canceled the World qualifiers due to COVID-19 issues.

Frank Acheampong, Iddrisu Baba, Daniel Amartey, Andy Yiadom, Joseph Paintsil, and Gideon Mensah are among the 30-man squad’s returnees.

Since the 2019 AFCON, Frank Acheampong has not been invited to the Black Stars camp. Andy Yiadom also returns to the senior national team following a 20-month break, as does Daniel Amartey of Leicester City.

After a seven-month absence, Mallorca’s defensive midfielder Baba Iddrisu and Vitoria Guimares’ left-back are called up to the national team.

The return of Ankaragücu striker Joseph Paintsil after a 48-month absence is the highlight of this list. This season, the forward has 11 goals in 32 games in the Turkish league, making him Ghana’s third-highest goalscorer in Europe.
