President Akufo-Addo has appointed Ben Abdallah Banda, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Offinso South and Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee in Parliament, as Special Coordinator for Zongo Development in the President’s Office.
This appointment follows the government’s decision to transfer oversight of Zongo and Inner City Development from the Ministry of Zongo and Inner City Development to the Presidency after the Ministry was abolished.
Insiders told MyNewsGh.com that Mr. Ben Abdallah Banda, as Special Coordinator, is expected to lead the Zongo Development Agenda in Ghana alongside the Chief Executive Officer and the ZDF board.
The Zongo Development Fund’s establishment has been credited with the rapid provision of educational opportunities, human development, and infrastructure development in Zongo communities.
Over the last four years, the Fund has built classrooms, water systems, drainage systems, access roads, and bridges in a number of Zongos, as well as provided many young people with entrepreneurial and vocational training opportunities.
In the field of education, the ZDF has provided tertiary grants to over 200 people, as well as scholarships to 40 brilliant but needy Zongo students studying medicine in Cuba. Campaign promise for 2016
Prior to the 2016 elections, the NPP promised to establish the Zongo Development Fund, which would solely focus on Zongo community development. However, following the party’s election victory in 2016.
President Akufo-Addo added a bonus by establishing a full ministry to work alongside the Zongo Development Fund Secretariat to carry out the vision of developing Zongos.
After experimenting with dual roles during the first term of the Akufo-Addo administration, the government has decided to scrap the Ministry and fully support the ZDF in its Zongo development mission.
